Trip to...

Montes de Malaga!

Posted by Daniel

We did an e-bike tour through the mountains of Malaga with two electric mountain bikes. The electric mountain bike (Dakota) is the best for cycling through the mountains of Malaga. From our shop, you cycle through the city towards the northeast to the Trepaolla restaurant, which I will tell you about later.

At Restaurante Trepaolla you cross the highway over a bridge and there the mountain tour begins. It takes some getting used to at first, but the Dakota's strong electric motor makes it easy to get up the mountain with as little effort as possible. The first part is steep but then it becomes flatter. The city disappears further and further away and you follow the A-7000 road. This is a 29-kilometer long road that takes you through the nature park “Parque Natural Montes de Malaga”, it is easy to follow and you see all the beautiful things of the park and the mountains.

Since 1989, the Montes de Málaga has been a Parque Natural with an area of almost 5000 hectares. Although the park is not very large, the differences are striking. For example, the northern part of the park receives much more rain than the southern part (900 to 500 mm per year). In the northern part, you will also find the highest peaks of the area, with the 1,301 meter high Cerro de “La Reina” as the winner. Los Molinos de San Telmo, at the extreme southern tip of the Montes de Málaga, is the lowest point at 90 meters.

After four kilometers the area becomes increasingly wooded and you cycle in the shade with the sound of birds and the wind blowing through the trees. After 8 kilometers you will reach a viewpoint called “mirador la Romantica”, this viewpoint is located at an altitude of 750 meters. Here you can see everything that Malaga has to offer: the sea, the city, and the mountains.

We cycled to the highest point Cerro de “La Reina”, here we enjoyed the view and continued our way downhill. Although we had electric mountain bikes with us, you don't need them for anything downhill. We raced downhill at speeds over 50 kilometers per hour. When we arrived back at the “Trapaolla” restaurant, we had lunch and something to drink there. It is a good restaurant with a large terrace and views over the city. You can eat well there and they have an extensive wine list.

If you are in Malaga, I definitely recommend taking a trip through the mountains, you will see the most beautiful views and enjoy nature. This can be done very easily with an electric bicycle. If you would like to rent an electric bicycle, be sure to visit the store.
