Botanical Garden
This week we went on an electric bike ride
On the move again! This week our e-bike ride took us to one of Málaga’s most enchanting destinations, the Historical-Botanical Garden La Concepción. Nestled in the hills on the outskirts of the city, this stunning 19th-century garden is home to an extraordinary collection of exotic plants from all around the world. If you enjoy nature, history, and adventure all in one, this is a must-visit, and arriving by electric bike makes the experience even better.
Getting to La Concepción by e-bike is a fun and peaceful journey. Starting from the E-bike Málaga shop, we head north following the banks of the Guadalmedina River. The ride is about 7 km and takes around 25 minutes, making it very accessible.
The route is more than just a way to reach your destination: it’s an experience in itself. Leaving through the city center, you’ll pedal past some of Málaga’s historic streets and landmarks such as the Atarazanas Market, where we grabbed a sandwich and some fruit from one of its many stalls to take with us.
Before reaching Avenida Jorge Silvela, where the urban landscape begins to blend with nature, you’ll pass through Calle Carretería, Málaga’s new hub of leisure and dining, and then ride along the Guadalmedina River, an urban regeneration area that offers a unique contrast between former industrial spaces and modern residential areas.
As you begin the gentle climb toward the botanical garden, you’ll notice the scenery changing. The air feels fresher, and the city noise fades away. The final stretch takes you along the Camino del Jardín Botánico, a road lined with lush greenery that hints at the tranquility awaiting you at the destination.
La Concepción is much more than just a park: born from a love story between two members of Málaga’s noble families, it is an oasis of biodiversity and history spanning 23 hectares of breathtaking landscapes. Founded in 1855 by the Marquises of Casa Loring, the garden contains more than 50,000 plants and 2,000 species, making it one of the most important tropical and subtropical gardens in Europe. Designed in the style of 19th-century English landscape gardens, it is full of waterfalls, streams, and winding paths that create a dreamlike atmosphere.
Stroll among giant ficus trees, towering palms, and an impressive bamboo grove that will transport you to another world. A walk inside the garden will lead you to a spectacular viewpoint overlooking the city, the Mediterranean Sea, and the surrounding mountains. You’ll also find themed gardens dedicated to different plant species, such as the section “Around the World in 80 Trees,” showcasing exotic species from Asia, Africa, and the Americas. The garden is also home to the Casa-Palacio de los Loring, a 19th-century mansion that adds an aristocratic touch to the visit.
But the adventure doesn’t have to end there. Just a few minutes away by bike from the botanical garden, you can visit El Limonero Reservoir, a natural spot that offers breathtaking views and a perfect environment to relax. Surrounded by hills and greenery, this reservoir is an ideal place to disconnect, take a break, and enjoy the landscape. There are also trails around the reservoir, perfect for exploring further by bike or even on foot.
Riding an e-bike to La Concepción and El Limonero is not only eco-friendly but also allows you to enjoy the route without worrying about the uphill sections. The electric boost makes the climb smooth and effortless, saving your energy for exploring the gardens.
The garden is open from April to September from 9:30 am to 8:30 pm and from October to March from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm. It is closed on Mondays. For prices or possible schedule changes, check the botanical garden’s official website.
If you’re looking for a mix of nature, history, and adventure, a visit to La Concepción Botanical Garden and El Limonero by e-bike is the perfect plan. The ride offers a unique way to see Málaga from a different perspective. Whether you’re a plant lover, a history enthusiast, or simply someone who enjoys a pleasant ride, this trip promises a refreshing escape from the city. Don’t miss it!
