One of the highlights and a real surprise for locals and foreigners is the way up to the top of Mount Gibralfaro, a spectacular tour.
The mountain by the sea has been one of the main reasons why Malaga has been a settlement point for so many different cultures throughout history.

Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, and Christians have occupied the area at different times, and thanks to them, today we can enjoy incredible monuments and archaeological remains, which, being surrounded by forests and gardens, create an unparalleled experience for the senses.

Right at the base, on the inside of the mountain, we have the remains of an ancient Roman theater, built in the early years of the Empire, with more than two thousand years, and combining the use of the hillside for the stands. The theater is one of our oldest monuments, but at the same time, one of the more recent ones, since it was only discovered in 1951, almost by accident, in the course of some works in the area.

In our ascent, through the inner face of the mountain, we will trace a route through the forest that occupies the slopes of the mountain, to its top. We will enjoy the best views of the historic center on a road traffic-free, which crosses one of the protected areas of Malaga that serve as an area for the conservation of the chameleon in freedom. These animals are somewhat difficult to observe, as they blend in with their surroundings, but they can measure up to 30 centimeters. Normally, a broom with southern exposure in an environment relatively close to the sea is a suitable place for your search, and as they are solitary and territorial animals, in successive excursions it will be easy to find it again in the same place or nearby.

The Alcazaba of Malaga is a fortress-palace built by the Arabs, before the Alhambra in Granada. It is the perfect prototype of military architecture of the 11th century, with its double-walled enclosure and a large number of fortifications, being the only parallel construction the Castle of the Knights Crac, a fortress built in Syria by the Crusaders between the twelfth and twelfth centuries.
This fortress has incredible beauty and a very good state of conservation.

In the front, next to Alcazaba, we will find the Puerta Oscura Gardens, which receive their name because of the existence of an ancient Arab gate that was near the gardens and are one of the best-known accesses to the way up to the Gibralfaro Viewpoint. Being on a hill, the slope forced to build the gardens in an ascending manner, creating terraces at different levels with a network of gardens intertwined by passageways and stairs, with fantastic fountains and corners.

Already at the top, we find the Gibralfaro Castle, which is named after an old lighthouse on the hill at the time of the Phoenicians. The word derives from the Phoenician Jabal-Faruk, which means Lighthouse Mountain.
Although it was used by Phoenicians and Romans, it was the Arabs who made it a fortress.
Later, during the reconquest he suffered the siege of the Catholic Monarchs during the summer of 1487, who managed to take it by force, to rebuild it later becoming the residence of the King. At that time it was considered the most impregnable fortress of the Iberian Peninsula.

Just up here is the Gibralfaro viewpoint, an unforgettable panoramic view experience at 130 meters high.
The port of Malaga with its lighthouse, the bullring, all the beaches on the east side and the Paseo del Parque will be available from the heights.

An hour and a half of a trip in which it will seem to you that you have tasted Malaga since its inception, all accompanied by the most beautiful stories and the information necessary to make this adventure an unforgettable experience.
