And Biking
On the move again!!!
This week, our electric bike ride took us to one of the most charming destinations in Málaga, the Historical-Botanical Garden La Concepción. Located in the hills on the outskirts of the city, this impressive 19th-century garden houses an extraordinary collection of exotic plants from around the world. If you enjoy nature, history, and a touch of adventure, this visit is a must, and arriving by electric bike makes the experience even better.
Getting to La Concepción by e-bike is a fun and relaxing journey. Departing from the E-bike Málaga shop, we head north, following the banks of the Guadalmedina River. The route is about 7 km and takes approximately 25 minutes, making it an accessible trip.
The route is more than just a way to reach your destination: it is an experience in itself. Leaving the city center, you will pedal through some of Málaga’s historic streets, passing iconic places such as the Atarazanas Market, where we grabbed a sandwich and some fruit from one of the many stalls to take with us.
Before reaching Avenida Jorge Silvela, where the urban landscape starts to blend with nature, you will pass through Calle Carretería, Málaga’s new hub for leisure and dining, and skirt the Guadalmedina River, an urban regeneration area that offers a unique contrast between old industrial zones and modern developments.
As you begin the gentle ascent towards the botanical garden, you will notice the landscape change. The air becomes fresher, and the urban noise fades away. The final stretch takes you along the Camino del Jardín Botánico, a road surrounded by lush vegetation, giving you a preview of the tranquility that awaits at the destination.
La Concepción is much more than just a park: born from the love story between two members of noble families from Málaga, it is an oasis of biodiversity and history spanning 23 hectares of breathtaking landscapes. Founded in 1855 by the Marquises of Casa Loring, the garden hosts over 50,000 plants and 2,000 species, making it one of the most important tropical and subtropical gardens in Europe.
These gardens, designed in the style of 19th-century English landscape gardens, are filled with waterfalls, streams, and paths that create a dreamlike atmosphere. Walk among enormous ficus trees, towering palm trees, and an impressive bamboo grove that will transport you to another world. A stroll inside the garden will take you to a spectacular viewpoint overlooking the city, the Mediterranean Sea, and the surrounding mountains.
There are also themed gardens dedicated to different plant species, such as the “Around the World in 80 Trees” section, where you will find exotic species from Asia, Africa, and America. The garden also houses the Casa-Palacio de los Loring, a 19th-century mansion that adds an aristocratic touch to the visit.
But the adventure doesn’t have to end here. Just a few minutes by bike from the botanical garden, you can visit the El Limonero reservoir, a natural enclave that offers stunning views and an ideal setting to relax. This reservoir, surrounded by hills and vegetation, is the perfect place to disconnect, take a break, and enjoy the landscape. Additionally, there are trails around the reservoir, perfect for further exploration by bike or even on foot.
Going by e-bike to La Concepción and El Limonero is not only eco-friendly but also allows you to enjoy the route without worrying about uphill sections. The electric boost makes the climb smooth and effortless, saving your energy for exploring the gardens.
The garden is open from April to September from 9:30 AM to 8:30 PM and from October to March from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM. It is closed on Mondays. For prices or possible schedule changes, check the botanical garden’s website.
If you’re looking for a mix of nature, history, and adventure, a visit to the Botanical Garden of La Concepción and El Limonero by e-bike is the perfect plan. The journey offers a unique way to see Málaga from a different perspective. Whether you are a plant lover, a history enthusiast, or simply someone who enjoys rides, this trip promises a refreshing escape from the city. Don’t miss it!
